Why are my blankets always on the fence?

Why am I a fan of hanging blankets on the fence?

UV rays are a great disinfectant! After I pull blankets off, I lay them “horse side” up on the fence on sunny days to let the sun get rid of whatever icky microbes might want to take up residence.

Keeping blankets washed appropriately is another good way to ensure that you aren’t growing anything gross but realistically, you aren’t going to wash blankets too many times in a season. Setting them out in the sunshine every time they come off the horse is a way easier plan, and isn’t going to affect your waterproofing the way regular washing will.

It’s also a good time to note that taking off blankets regularly is an important part of winter horse care. Rotating through different blankets based on the weather and what the horse needs, as well as taking them off regularly to make sure that the horse isn’t developing rubs, or gaining or losing too much body condition. We’ve all heard the horror stories of people who pull blankets off at the end of the winter and find a super skinny (or super fat) horse underneath. Rotating different blankets is a great way to minimize rubs and pressure spots
